Central Health update on recruitment of physician specialists - 23/08/2017

August 23, 2017 - Grand Falls-Windsor, NL - After comprehensive and successful recruitment activities, Central Health has welcomed 11 physician specialists to the medical staff at James Paton Memorial Regional Health Centre in Gander and Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre in Grand Falls-Windsor since April 2017.

  • 1 anesthetist (CNRHC)
  • 1 psychiatrist (CNRHC)
  • 3 pediatricians (1 CNRHC, 2 JPMRHC)
  • 1 urologist (CNRHC)
  • 2 internists (JPMRHC)
  • 2 obstetricians/gynecologists (JPMRHC)
  • 1 clinical associate, OR (JPMRHC)

The recent recruitment of pediatricians and obstetricians/gynecologists will provide the clinical expertise and support to re-establish obstetrical services at James Paton Memorial Regional Health Centre. Since April 2017 all obstetrical services have been diverted to Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre. The Regional Chief of Obstetrical Services will be working closely with the new physicians to ensure the consistency, quality, and safety of regional obstetrical services. Obstetrical services are expected to resume at JPMRHC in fall 2017.

"Physician recruitment has a number of challenges, including national competition for a limited pool of specialists. Physicians already working with Central Health play an important role in our ability to attract, recruit, and retain physicians. Not unlike other professions, physicians want to work with people they studied or worked with before, and they want to work in a collaborative and healthy work environment. I want to thank physicians at both regional referral centres for their interest and participation in recruiting medical staff. These new recruits strengthen services across the health region."
           -        Dr. Jeff Cole, VP Medical Services

"As a regional health authority, we are committed to delivering safe and accessible health care services across a large geographic area. Both staff and locum physician specialists play critical roles in our ability to provide specialist services at our regional referral centres. The 11 specialists who have recently joined our medical staff bring diversity, clinical skills, and stability to our regional referral centres and the people we serve."
           -        Rosemarie Goodyear, President and CEO

Central Health plans and delivers health care services to approximately 94,000 people living in 177 communities.
