Aging Well at Home Grant and Caregiver Benefit 

Aging Well at Home Grant

 

The Aging Well at Home Grant provides financial assistance to low-income adults over the age of 65 who live in their own home to help with the costs of household and health-care services.

 

About the grant

  • Eligible households will receive $400.

  • Only one person per household may apply for the supplement.

 

Who can apply for the grant?

 

Eligible individuals must:

  • Be 65 years of age or older as of March 31, 2024;

  • Have an annual household net income of $34,999 or less for couples or $24,999 or less for single households (“Net Income” is the income identified on Line 23600 of the Federal Income Tax Return or in the Notice of Assessment provided by the Canada Revenue Agency);

  • Live in a home or apartment that you own or rent. Only one person can apply from each household;

  • Be a resident of Newfoundland and Labrador; and,

  • Have paid, or will pay, for household and healthcare services between April 1, 2024, and March 31, 2025.

 

What services are eligible?

 

Funding can be used for the following services that help you stay in your home including:

  • Cooking and meal preparation (excluding the cost of food).

  • Grocery and meal delivery (excluding the cost of food).

  • Health care services – such as eye exams, dental work, mental health supports, physical therapy, occupational therapy, massage therapy, foot care, dietitians, audiology, and speech language pathologists.

  • Home cleaning, laundry, organization, and help with downsizing or moving.

  • Medication and prescription delivery (excluding cost of medication and prescription).

  • Outdoor work – such as driveway maintenance, landscaping, lawn care, snow removal, stacking wood, and tree removal.

  • Small home repairs – such as windows, doors, roof, plumbing, electrical, decks, fencing, siding, and painting.

  • Transportation – such as taxis, ride shares, shuttles, and other methods of transportation to get to appointments.

Caregiver Benefit

 

The Caregiver Benefit is provided to caregivers to sustain the support they provide to lower-income adults, aged 65 and over, who have high-care needs as determined by NL Health Services.

About the grant

  • Eligible caregivers will receive $400 per month.

  • Both the caregiver and care recipient must be residents of Newfoundland and Labrador.

  • The caregiver must be 19 years of age or older and the care recipient must be 65 years of age or older

 

Who can apply for the grant?

Both the caregiver and care recipient must meet eligibility criteria for the program.

To be eligible to receive the Caregiver Benefit, a caregiver must:

  • be 19 years of age or older;

  • provide meaningful, significant and regular care to an eligible care recipient as determined by NL Health Services. Meaningful and significant care can include supporting activities of daily living including supporting the care recipient to eat and drink, supporting personal care including bathing, washing hair, dressing, etc. supporting continence care, supervision, housekeeping and meal preparation;

  • have a relationship with the care recipient that is ongoing, regular and expected to extend beyond 90 days;

  • not be paid to provide assistance to the care recipient; and

  • sign an Agreement with NLHS defining any terms and conditions for receiving the caregiver benefit.

 

The person receiving care (care recipient) must:

  • be 65 years of age or older;

  • have a caregiving relationship with an eligible caregiver that is ongoing, regular and is expected to extend beyond 90 days;

  • have an annual household net income of $34,999 or less for couples or $24,999 or less for single households (“Net Income” is the income identified on Line 23600 of the Federal Income Tax Return or in the Notice of Assessment provided by the Canada Revenue Agency).

  • have been assessed by Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services to require significant care as determined by the outcome of a clinical assessment (RAI-HC MAPLe score of 5).
