Multi-patient occurrence affecting mammogram results in Central Health

August 24, 2022

On Wednesday, August 17, Central Health became aware of the possibility that some mammograms were being read on viewing workstations that do not meet technical standards for the review of mammography images.

Central Health took immediate action to confirm this and set in motion an audit to determine if mammography images had been read to standard. Our sample review suggests the occurrence presents a low risk to patients; however, out of an abundance of caution, Central Health has hired a radiologist to review all images that were identified as having been read on a viewing station that was not to technical standard to ensure that reports are accurate.

Central Health has completed a sample review, and a full review is underway. Our sample review included 329 patients, among which two patients needed new or updated reports. Central Health has reached out to the two patients and their primary care providers to advise of this and identify next steps, if required. The full review includes the images of approximately 3,000 patients who received mammograms between November 1, 2019 and August 19, 2022.

In addition to the public notification issued earlier this week, Central Health is in the process of sending letters to all patients whose images are subject to the review, notifying them of the process.

Following the full review, patients whose images do not show any discrepancies will receive a letter from Central Health as soon as possible and by the end of September verifying this.

Central Health values quality service and the safety of our patients remains our priority. For those patients whose images show possible diagnostic discrepancies, Central Health will take several steps: we will be reaching out to their primary health care provider; we will be contacting the patient by phone; and we will be following up with a letter. These steps will be taken by the end of September to make them aware of next steps.

A toll-free line has been set up for those who have questions at 1-833-960-4571 which will be staffed from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm daily.

We appreciate and apologize for any concerns that this issue may have created. Central Health understands the importance of quickly sharing information with patients who may be impacted and alleviating the concerns many may be feeling at this time. We are taking all required steps to address this occurrence in a timely and thorough manner. We thank you for your patience and understanding.

Please be assured that scheduled mammograms are not affected. They are proceeding according to schedule and will be read to technical standards.
