Suspension of Acute Care at A.M. Guy Memorial Health Centre in Buchans

Central Health would like to advise that admissions to acute care in A.M. Guy Memorial Health Centre in Buchans is temporarily suspended. The reason for this suspension is so we can dedicate additional staff to residents in long-term care.

COVID-19 is a public health emergency in Newfoundland and Labrador and has been declared as such under the Public Health Protection and Promotion Act. While a public health emergency is in effect, the Chief Medical Officer of Health can introduce special measures that they believe are necessary to protect the health of the population.

On April 14, 2020, the Chief Medical Officer of Health issued an order to all operators and staff of personal care homes and long-term care facilities in Newfoundland and Labrador. The order states that operators of personal care homes and long-term care facilities are prohibited from permitting staff to work across multiple personal care home and long-term care facility locations, unless required in exceptional circumstances and where an exemption has been granted.

Patients arriving at the A.M. Guy Memorial Health Centre will be assessed by a physician and may be transferred to another health care facility based on their needs.

Central Health apologizes for this temporary interruption of service and remains committed to delivering safe and sustainable health care to the residents of Buchans.
