Update on implementation of External Review recommendations

The ongoing work of the Implementation Steering Committee, appointed to oversee the implementation of the Central Health External Review recommendations, continues to shape a new direction for healthcare within the Central Regional Health Authority.

As of September 30, 2019, 36 of the recommendations stemming from the Central Regional Integrated Health Authority External Review have been actioned. Fifty per cent (18) of the recommendations are considered completed and fifty per cent (18) are in progress. In total, there were 145 actions, stemming from the 36 recommendations, identified by the Implementation Steering Committee.  The updated report can be found here.

Central Health appointed an Implementation Steering Committee to oversee implementation of the recommendations. The Steering Committee includes representatives from Central Health’s Board of Trustees, Memorial University’s Faculty of Medicine, and the Department of Health and Community Services; with external review lead Dr. Vaughan acting as an advisor along with Central Health’s President and CEO. In addition, Dr. Martin Vogel continues to  work with Central Health’s leadership team on the physician-related recommendations identified in the external review report.

The external review’s recommendations primarily address governance, leadership, clinical management, relationships, succession planning, and community engagement.

The Implementation Committee’s action plan identified three goals to address the recommendations:

  1. Support Central Health in cultivating and fostering a culture that lives its values of compassion, accountability, respect, equity and safety.

  2. Enable the continued development and implementation of a person-and -family-centred care approach, regional programs and services, collaborative practice and respectful workplaces.

  3. Serve as the basis for regular reporting to the Department of Health and Community Services and the public.
