Central Health is experiencing a temporary resource shortage at the Baie Verte Peninsula Health Centre (BVPHC) in Baie Verte. Residents requiring emergency services during this time are advised to call 911 or proceed to the nearest emergency room where they will be seen. Individuals presenting to BVPHC may be assessed through a virtual emergency room service. There will be support available for patient care on-site and will be determined through the initial virtual ER assessment.
Emergency services will be supported through Virtual ER assessment on the following dates and times:
December 8, 8:00 p.m. – 8:00 a.m. (December 9)
December 14, 8:00 p.m. – 8:00 a.m. (December 15)
December 15, 8:00 p.m. – 8:00 a.m. (December 16)
December 22, 8:00 p.m. – 8:00 a.m. (December 23)
December 27, 8:00 p.m. – 8:00 a.m. (December 28)
While Virtual ER services are offered, and through the support of the current Physician team and the collaborative health team, the following services will continue to be offered at the facility:
Acute Care (inpatient)
Medical Clinic (doctor’s office)
Continuing Care (Community Nursing)
Mental Health and Addictions

How Virtual ER works
In many respects, a Virtual ER operates the same as a traditional Emergency Room.
A patient requiring Emergency Services would present to the healthcare site.
The patient will be seen and assessed by the local healthcare team, this could include a Registered Nurse and or Nurse Practitioner, and either an Advanced Care Paramedic and/or a Respiratory Therapist.
The patient will be assessed by a physician virtually and managed with the support of the team on the ground.
As required, patients would be transported to the nearest Category A Hospital – Grand Falls-Windsor or Gander – to further manage their needs.
Central Health continues its efforts in recruitment for this area for both physicians and non-physician healthcare workers. Central Health has been engaging physicians directly about potential opportunities and is working with a recruitment firm to assist in its search for physicians.
We apologize for this interruption of service and thank the public for their understanding and patience as we continue to focus on providing safe and quality care for the residents of the Baie Verte area.
